It's Official! The Question Finally, Officially Answered

This showed up in my google news alerts just now. My hands are shaking too hard, so I’ll just provide the link to the report of the English/Japanese interview with Shinichiro Watanabe where he answers The Question, publicly and officially. http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2013/05/26-1/video-rare-english-interview-with-cowboy-bebop-director-shinichiro-watanabe

EDIT: You have to watch the interview, The Question comes up about 8 minutes in.

Is it true? ( I can’t watch the video right now ) Is Spike alive?

      • Geeze, took me a while to see this! Sorry about that. He’s alive if we saw him live, he’s dead if you saw him die I guess. He won’t give a definitive answer, but he did say that those who say he survived are “probably correct.” I THOUGHT it was ambiguous and it looks like I was probably right. I didn’t see him die as did a number of people, while a number of people DID see him die. They’ll never stop asking him that question.

    • I’m afraid I kind of jumped the gun when I posted this. According to the crunchyroll article, yes, he’s alive. If you go to youtube for the video, it says “in his opinion” he survived.

Basically, he was asked about the end of Cowboy Bebop, assuming that Spike died, and his answer was basically “he’s sleeping. It’s ok to think he’s dead, but I think people who think he’s sleeping are probably correct.” Or words to that effect. I want to get the time to listen to what he actually said (someone was translating for most of it), but he wasn’t saying anything different from what he’s been saying for years, just went a bit farther and said that the people who think he’s sleeping at the end are probably correct.

I guess the question HAS been answered – officially, the ending is ambiguous and Shinichiro Watanabe thinks he’s alive.

Some people I’ve heard from are not taking that news at all well either. Oh well, he’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t with this question. It’s ambiguous, deliberately so.

That’s what I took away from it.

Thanks :) ( I was just able to watch the video ) It’s very intriguing isn’t it? I was a little confused on what he meant at first, but that cleared things up! If Shinchiro thinks Spike is alive, wouldn’t that be the answer? The whole “choose your own ending” is kinda cool though. :) I was one of the people who thought he was asleep! I’m happy that he thinks that too.
